Professorship (W2) of Artificial Intelligence in Pneumology (f/m/x)

102758

Full time

Munich

The Faculty of Medicine of LMU Munich and the Helmholtz Zentrum München - German Research Center for Environmental Health (Helmholtz Munich) invite applications for a Professorship (W2) (5 years/tenure track) of Artificial Intelligence in Pneumology combined with the lead of a working group at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity at Helmholtz Munich commencing as soon as possible.

The professorship covers the discipline in every aspect of research and academic teaching.

Research Focus

The professorship is affiliated to the Institute of Experimental Pneumology at the University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich. At the same time the professorship will entail the lead of a working group associated to the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity (LHI) at Helmholtz Zentrum München. The professorship ‘Artificial Intelligence in Pneumology’ is dedicated to the study of lung and respiratory diseases from the specific perspective of artificial intelligence (AI) in single-cell data analysis and its application in biomedical research projects in the field of pneumology.

The associated work group will make use of cutting-edge technologies including multi-Omics approaches such as single-cell transcriptomics to uncover physiological and pathological cellular and molecular processes in the lung building a bridge to novel clinical applications. Applicants are expected to strengthen interdisciplinary research consortia at LMU Munich. The professorship does not comprise clinical duties.

The professorship is affiliated with the local infrastructure of the LHI at Helmholtz Munich, of the “Comprehensive Pneumology Center-Munich” (CPC-M) and in the various “Disease Areas” of the German Center for Lung Research ( DZL (https://dzl.de/en/) ), thus allowing access to established research platforms and also to apply for research projects

Qualifications

Applicants should ideally have extensive experience in applying artificial intelligence to analyze and integrate genomic data, particularly single-cell data across datasets and modalities. They are also expected to have critically evaluated AI methods in this field. Existing activities or involvement in international consortia and networks in these areas are of advantage. Forward-looking research concepts with a clear connection to clinical applications are expected. Concepts that combine AI with modern experimental methods, such as single-cell technologies, to improve the understanding of chronic lung diseases and contribute to their diagnosis are of particular interest.

LMU Munich and Helmholtz Munich seek to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourage early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The future holder of this position will be appointed to LMU Munich as a university professor (pay grade W2) under the terms of a private-law contract and will be granted leave of absence in order to be employed by Helmholtz Munich as the lead of an associated working group at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity.

The initial appointment will be for five years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.
