The East Asia Department of the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) – Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) seeks to fill the position of a

Research Librarian (f/d/m)

in its China Section. The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin is one of the largest and most capable libraries in Europe. We speak more than 80 languages, develop world-class knowledge resources, and aim to promote international exchange and free access to information with state-of-the-art technologies. Founded in 1661, we consistently focus on digital self-determination and the active participation of our users. The East Asia Department is responsible for one of the internationally most renowned collections on and about Asia, parts of which are supported by the German Research Foundation. With CrossAsia, it develops and offers innovative services for the Asia-related sciences, especially in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences. Your tasks

  • Further development of CrossAsia and related digital services, drafting of concepts, partaking in the evaluation and selection of databases subject to licensing with a focus costs, conducting negotiations with database providers and vendors
  • Designing and developing tools for the processing of electronic texts in the field of Digital Humanities (data and text mining, NLP etc.) and promoting them.
  • Planning and conducting of user education activities in the field of Sinology / Chinese Studies, especially on modern media (statistical databases, politics, economics, and social sciences)
  • Identification, selection and acquisition of new publications and antiquarian materials (with a focus on electronic and digital media) as well as cataloguing and/or indexing

Anforderungsprofil:

Your profile

  • A completed university degree in Sinology / Chinese Studies (Magister, Master or equivalent) or a completed university degree in Computer Science together with excellent knowledge of the Chinese language and script (modern and pre-modern)
  • A proven good experience in handling information media on modern China and, in addition, knowledge in the field of computer science or information science
  • Excellent knowledge of Chinese and preferably another East Asian language (Japanese, Korean, Manchurian, etc.) as well as an excellent command of English
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the organization and structure of the sciences as well as the publishing industry/market in the PR China (incl. Hong Kong and Macao) and Taiwan

Desirable:

  • The ability and willingness to engage constructively and collaborate in international, interdisciplinary and cross-departmental teams
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of relevant description languages and metadata standards in XML (e.g. TEI, METS / MODS, OAI-PMH, LIDO) as well as the associated processing tools and associated techniques, such as XSLT, XSL-FO, XQuery and corresponding development environments
