Programme “Environmental Governance and Transformation to Sustainability” is looking for a

Researcher (m/f)

Salary according to German public service tariff (EG 14 TVöD)

Approximately € 49.000 p.a. to € 73.000 p.a. depending on qualifications;

The position is available as of 1 January, 2019 and is currently limited until 31 December, 2021.

Successful candidates will carry out research and policy advice in the interdisciplinary research project “Klimalog: Research and dialogue for a climate-smart and just transformation,” with a particular focus on adaptation governance and climate resilience. The researcher will address either of the following issues: implementation of the Paris Agreement related to adaptation and loss and damage; comprehensive risk management in the context of climate change, especially with regard to slow-onset impacts and climate vulnerable peoples; interlinkages between climate policy and climate risk management or displacement and migration; the governance of the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage and the implementation of its work plan.


Qualifications and requirements:

  • PhD in political science, social science or economics or in geography, environmental or agricultural sciences with a distinct social science research track record (thesis should at least be submitted);
  • Proven knowledge and in-depth research experience in at least one of the above mentioned issues in addition to a thorough general understanding of climate policy, sustainable development and international cooperation;
  • Experience in translating research into policy advice and with pertinent outreach formats, such as UNFCCC side-events, and the media;
  • Field-research experience and strong research networks, especially in the context of climate-vulnerable developing countries, are considered valuable assets;
  • Job-related experience with pertinent institutions and processes of the UNFCCC and related institutions within the UN system as well as with climate and development related institutions and processes of the European Union are considered valuable assets;
  • Excellent command of English in speech and in writing is required and excellent command of German is strongly desired, proficiency in other major international languages are valuable assets;
  • Readiness to travel abroad is assumed, including to countries with a tropical climate (“Tropentauglichkeit”).
